How lock modes affect you
Your site chooses how a lock wakes and what it does after accepting a credential. These are separate settings. A lock can, for example, need a spin to wake and automatically relock after access.
You do not need to change settings to use a door. Follow the behavior chosen by your site. Available modes depend on the site's configuration and lock firmware.
How to wake the lock
| Behavior | What you experience | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | The lock wakes when someone approaches. | Approach, present your credential, and wait for the result. |
| Spin to wake (called Standard-spin in the dashboard) | People walking past do not wake the lock. | Spin the knob first, then present your credential. A presentation before wake will not register. |
| Efficiency | The lock also needs a spin, and reduces background radio activity to save power. | Spin the knob, then present. Once awake, credential reads run normally. |
A site can schedule behavior changes, so the same door may wake differently at different times. Spin-to-wake is different from turning the knob to open the door after access is granted.
What happens after your credential is accepted
| Locking mode | What happens | What this means at the door |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-relock | The lock releases for a configured number of seconds, then secures again. | Open promptly. If you miss the window, request access again. Close the door behind you. |
| Toggle | Each accepted credential switches between secured and unsecured and leaves it in that state. | A second presentation can lock it again. Follow the site's instructions for leaving the door secured. |
| Absolute | An accepted credential sets one configured state, secured or unsecured. | Repeating the presentation does not alternate states. Ask the site which action this door is configured to perform. |
| Reader | The lock validates and records the credential without operating the locking mechanism. | A green read confirmation alone will not release the door. Follow the site's entry instructions. |
These descriptions explain credential presentations. In the app, follow the specific action and result displayed by the unlock control.
An automatic relock operates the mechanism; it does not physically close an open door. Check that the door has closed as your site requires.
When a lock is temporarily out of normal use
Service mode is for installation and maintenance. Normal credentials and ordinary app unlocks are unavailable during this mode. A purple indication can appear when service starts or ends. Contact the person working on the door instead of repeatedly trying your credential.
Hibernate puts the lock into a deliberate low-power state. It does not respond to normal card presentation or knob handling and may show no light. An eligible nearby app unlock can still be offered; follow the app's result. If you cannot use the door, contact authorized staff to wake it. Spinning the knob is not the normal way to exit hibernate.
Only authorized staff should change these settings. If you maintain locks, see Mobile device-mode controls.
